How to Measure Your Dog for a Bed

Size & Fit Guide

Weight alone does not tell you how much space a dog uses when resting. A compact dog who stretches straight out may need more length than a larger dog who curls into a circle. Start with the shape they actually make when they settle.

1. Watch one relaxed nap

Notice whether your dog lies on their side, curls tightly, extends their front legs, or rests their head on an edge. If they change position often, measure the most spread-out position as well as the curled one. Do not pull their legs or hold them in place to measure.

2. Measure the resting outline

With your dog relaxed, measure from the nose or frontmost resting point to the rump or rearmost resting point. Then measure across the widest part of their resting outline, including their legs. Use a tape measure on the floor beside them. Write down both measurements in inches.

As a practical starting point, allow several extra inches beyond that outline so the dog can shift position. This is a fitting suggestion, not a size guarantee. A dog who likes to stretch or change positions may need more room.

3. Read the right kind of dimension

Product detail What to compare
Overall / outside dimensions The complete footprint, including sides or frame. Use this to check your room.
Sleeping surface The usable resting panel when explicitly listed. Compare this with your dog’s resting outline.
Flat pad dimensions Length, width, and thickness where available. For a crate, compare with the inside floor measurements.
Round bed diameter The outside circle unless an inner diameter is specifically stated. The rim takes up some of that space.

We do not estimate an interior size from a photo or subtract a guessed bolster width. If an exact sleeping area is important and it is not listed, contact us before buying.

4. Measure the home, too

Mark the full bed footprint with paper or removable tape. Check nearby doors, cabinet drawers, walking routes, and your dog’s approach. For raised beds, include the frame height and leave clear floor space at the entry. For a sofa mat, check the seat and the front panel separately.

5. Make a final fit check

Compare the selected option, dimensions, material, and any explicitly listed weight limit. Do not use a breed label as a substitute for measurements. Inspect the bed when it arrives, before allowing your dog to use it, so you can preserve the unused return condition if the size is wrong.
